More women councillors in Vic councils

By AAP Newswire

The average local politician in Victoria is a married man aged in his mid-forties, but the gender gap is closing, new data shows.

More than 40 per cent of councillors were women in 2017, compared to about 30 per cent in 2006, the Municipal Association of Victoria 2017 census shows.

And female councillors are also smarter - with higher levels of postgraduate qualifications than their male counterparts. That's despite almost half having caring responsibilities compared to less than 30 per cent of male councillors.
